Your master bedroom is your haven and your escape from the world outside. In fact, it may even represent your escape from the world inside your home! It’s the place you go to leave behind work, obligations, and even where you get a break from parenting.
You certainly don’t want to walk into this room and see chaos and clutter piled to the ceiling. It’s important to get the master bedroom clean so you can truly kick back and relax… or even just close your eyes in a peaceful environment.
Start by walking into your bedroom and taking a look around. What jumps out at you? Is it really cluttered? Is there a piece of furniture piled high with clothes, magazines, or books? Is the laundry hamper toppling over? No matter how big or small this eye-sore is, take care of it first.
Make your bed, straighten the hamper, dump the magazines – do whatever it takes. This will make you feel a lot better and give you the motivation it will take to get through the rest of your room.
It makes sense to tackle any flat surfaces next. Your dresser, headboard, any side or end tables, or even your cedar chest tend to build things up on them because they’re flat surfaces. It’s really easy to throw books, magazines, papers, and clothing onto these surfaces.
It helps me to start at one side of the room and work my way around each flat surface into the room. Take everything from each surface and put it into other containers. It works well to have a “put away” container and a trash can. Obviously, you should throw the trash away.
In general I find a laundry basket works well for the “put away” container, and will hold most of the accumulated clutter from my bedroom. Go around and clean off your surfaces into your container. You’ll feel amazingly better just seeing clean surfaces.
Arrange you knick-knacks, books, and other things so they’re pleasant to look at. Then take your basket to another room and go through it. You don’t have to do this right away, in fact, you should get back to the bedroom first. But you do want to remember to come back and do it.
Head back to the bedroom. Now that you can see surfaces, run a dust cloth over them and get them looking really good. Change your sheets, fluff your comforter, and refill the humidifier if you’re running one. Make the bed. You’ll be surprised how much this helps.
The floors are your final step (we’re not going to look at the closet right now!) If you have things piled on the floor treat those the same way you treated the things on your flat surfaces. Once the floor is cleared of clutter, run the vacuum cleaner.
Now stand back and take a look at your bedroom. It looks like a whole new room. Neat, clean, and peaceful. If you’ve been thinking about doing a little redecorating, now is the time. Your room is ready and waiting.
